Why doesn't SHOW TABLE work?

SHOW TABLE and other SHOW ... commands are not regular SQL, they are commands of ISQL tool. If you wish to get such information in your application, you need to query the system tables (exactly what isql does). You can find details in source code of any open source administration tool like ISQL or FlameRobin or connectivity libraries like PHP's ADOdb.
