Why doesn't my AFTER INSERT trigger work?

You are probably trying to change values in the table, but it is too late at this point. AFTER INSERT trigger happens AFTER the insert, so any assignment to new. variables has no effect on the data in the table. You need to use BEFORE INSERT trigger if you wish to modify the data that gets into table.
